Back when in the old days in Taiwan, noodle makers were considered blue-collar workers. It was a family tradition to pass down the trade from father to son, son to grandson. But this back-breaking work wasn’t an enviable job.
Now, in today’s age of fancy technology, noodle makers are hard to find, especially when a machine can easily churn out chewy strands faster than humanly possible. That’s why we have decided to do everything old school.
Andrew Chen, one of the owners and chief noodle maker, makes everything from scratch. He’s become a semi-superstar for his craft.
Chen’s restaurants focus on street food — the dishes he lusted for after a night of drinking in Taipei...and so, the "hipster Chinese food" cult begin in a small stand in Deep Ellum to the now 3 locations and counting.
"The best bowls of noodles come with a superpower: Once you dive in, slurping up good sauces and springy and tender noodles..."
"I could eat that spicy beef noodle soup every day for the rest of my life. As long as Monkey King Noodle Co. is open, I’m happy."
"It's hard to go wrong with Monkey King Noodle Company. The noodles here are hand-pulled and everything from the cold beef..."
We usually eat family style when we eat there, which means we share everything, but the Edamame Dumplings are so delicious, that they are hard to share! The Three Treasures Stir-Fry is also yummy and vegetarian. The Brisket Fried Rice features local BBQ restaurant Terry Black's Smoked Brisket Burnt Ends -- OMG, the meat is tender and the spice is just right.
came in with a friend impulsively with no expectations . We got noodle soups and dumplings, plus some pork tater tots. It is SO good, everything is very freshly made and tasty. Definitely could be an adventurous eat for those who don't branch out (aka me) . restaurant is very clean and the cashier helped me decide what would be best to order and gave me plenty of recommendations . i'll def be back.
Happily found this place while waiting for my car in the shop. We originally went to a coffeehouse next door but the smell and active customers showing up, it drew me to eat lunch there! Lots of parking infront, don't believe there will be an issue with that. I went a little overboard with ordering but def had leftovers for the next 2 days. We got the beef wonton soup (the cashier mentioned beef was most popular), beef stir fry, scallion pancakes, and wontons in chili sauce. I asked for sriracha and sweet and sour sauce on side too...
We have been to this location numerous times and it never disappoints! The restaurant is very clean and the people are nice. The food is fresh and always good. I love their tofu dumplings, scallion pancakes and Napa slaw. My husband had a hard time figuring out the best spice levels, but loves the brisket fried rice (level 1). We highly recommend everyone giving this place a try!
First time visiting and I'll be back. Walked in and said I wanted something hot and spicy. The Hot Spicy Beef Noodle Soup was recommended. I was asked the heat level and I said 10. They double and triple checked to make sure I really wanted a 10. Most of the time a 10 is so-so on the heat scale. Monkey King's 10 is a righteous 10!!! The brisket was tender and the noodles were very flavorful and it was HOT. Loved it!!!!...
